How to tell if you have bed bugs

• Bites in lines or small clusters on arms, neck, legs or back, usually noticed in the morning.
• Small dark spots on mattress seams, sheets and pillowcases. These are bed bug droppings.
• Tiny blood spots on sheets.
• Live bugs or pale shed skins in mattress seams, bed joints and sofa seams. Adults are flat, reddish-brown and about the size of an apple seed.
• A musty smell in rooms with heavy infestations.

Why bed bugs are hard to eliminate

Bed bugs hide in seams, joints, cracks and switchboards, and can survive for weeks without feeding. Their eggs are protected and survive many treatments. Household sprays usually make things worse by scattering the bugs into other rooms and furniture.

They don't come from dirt. They travel in luggage, second-hand furniture, guests' belongings and, in apartment buildings, along pipes and wiring from neighbouring flats.

How we treat bed bugs

1. Inspection. We check beds, mattresses, sofas, curtains, wall cracks and switchboards in every room people sleep or sit in, to find how far the bugs have spread.
2. Steam. High-temperature steam on mattresses, bed frames and upholstered furniture kills bed bugs and eggs on contact, without soaking them in chemicals.
3. Residual treatment. We apply insecticide to cracks, crevices, bed frames, furniture joints and around switchboards, where steam can't reach.
4. Follow-up. Eggs laid before the treatment hatch over the following one to two weeks, so a follow-up treatment about two weeks later is standard. The treatment carries a 45-day warranty.

How to prepare

• Wash bedding, curtains and clothes from the affected rooms in hot water, then dry them in the sun or on high heat.
• Clear the space under beds and around sofas so the technician can reach every joint and seam.
• Don't move furniture or mattresses to other rooms; that spreads the bugs.
• Seal clothes and items you have cleaned in bags until the treatment is complete.
